That will be a load of crap, because what Ashton (and Hindley) need are road bypasses, because both towns are at the intersection of main 'A roads' Ashton town centre is at the cross roads of the A49 and A58, Hindley is at the crossroads of the A577 and A58, and both places are traffic congested hell holes

Ref Tommy's link, I wonder why Mollynew have MBE after his name? I know very well in reality to get such an 'honour' you have to have a mate in the workplace who is william shakespeare at lauding you up in writing and sends the form of adulation off to Cabinet Office, where it doesn't get disbelieved and you get a gong. just wondering what his citation was?

What a load of optimistic shite coming from Wigan council.
"Art Trails"? Wow! Them's going to be really welcomed, eh.?
Ashton is doing ok, at the moment, as it is. And, do you know why it is?
Because there's plenty parking space!
So, the council are saying "we'll use the money to create a multifunctional square area" and "Establishing a
modern market square".
That means stopping car-parking on the market square?

"alleviate congestion"? By restricting vehicular movement? That's rich!

Bloody Wigan council clowns, leave Ashton alone!

The market square should still be a market twice a week and never a car park . I used to help out working on that market for years. Even the traders in those days had to shift their vans somewhere by 8am and they all used the bumpy ground at what is today Millingford grove behind the council office. The phrase Market square insinuates the place is a market , as i well remember it, not a 24/7 car park that it has sadly morphed into today.
